Leasing storage space - made easy
This article provides some tips on how to book storage space properly. This includes how to determine your space requirements in order to save money, and what payment options are best for your needs. It all sounds so easy: defining your requirements, selecting a provider and arranging the handover of keys. However, if you take a closer look, it’s clear that the matter isn’t quite as straight-forward as it sounds. Before you rush to sign the lease, we recommend getting in touch with the provider. The best option is to contact the provider and ask for advice, concerning your space requirement. Describe your objects and read over the small print – such as minimum leasing period, notice period and payment methods. Some providers can even be sneaky when billing: while some providers charge per calendar month, other companies demand payment on a weekly basis.
While this may not seem so bad at first glance, the weekly billing corresponds to one additional month’s rent at the end of the year (13 billing periods every 4 weeks versus 12 periods with monthly billing). Notice periods are usually between 2 and 4 weeks. Don’t forget: if you book a compartment online, you have a 14-day right of cancellation in accordance with the Distance Selling Act. What’s more, if you’re looking for a storage room privately, there’s no need to fear commercial self-storage providers: unlike with apartment rental, no commission is charged when leasing self-storage. Additionally, almost all self-storage providers offer insurance, which provides extra security together with the contract.
Determining your needs
Before you rent storage space, you should think about the storage space required. You can determine your space requirements based on the items you need to store. Books and files require less space as they can easily be stacked. Particularly bulky items such as furniture, household appliances, pictures or sports equipment are difficult to stack or pack up. Nevertheless, experience has taught us that for every 10m² of living space, you need around 1m² of storage space. Based on this, you can accommodate all the furnishings of a 40m² apartment inside a 4-5m² storage compartment. In doing so, you don’t only use the area, but also the height of the compartment. Choosing a provider
