Safe storage for carnival costumes in Mainz
The famous Shrovetide in Mainz
A paper by the Mainz scholar and humanist Dietrich Gresemund at the end of the 15th century described the Shrovetide as a disorganized folk festival with costumes, food, drinks and dancing through day and night. In the run-up to the revolution of 1848, the Mainz carnival took on a completely different meaning. The so-called "Narrhalla" was the only publication under foolish cover for democracy and freedom of the press at his time, around 1843. After the victory of the revolution in 1848 the “Narrhalla" was stopped, because its task was now fulfilled.
Today Mainz has a total of 23 carnival clubs and 25 guards. An average of 500.000 people travels to the Shrove Monday procession every year, making the Mainz Carnival a not insignificant economic event in the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital.
Together with Cologne and Düsseldorf, Mainz is one of the strongholds of the Rhineland carnival. It is one of the largest and most traditional events of its kind. The traditional carnival colours are red, white, blue and yellow.
Where to store the carnival costumes after the season?
What would a carnival be without the right costumes? In a city like Mainz, where the Shrovetide plays such an important role, almost everyone owns a proper carnival costume. Such fairings can be purchased from very cheap to very exclusive and expensive. If you have an expensive carnival outfit you probably want to wear it for several seasons. The big question is now, where to store it during the summer months when it is not used. As a family for example, it can be the case that at home is not enough place for various disguises.
Cellars or attics are poorly suited for high-quality, sensitive costumes, as the storage conditions are usually not optimal. Cellars often have a very high humidity, which quickly makes the clothes musty. In attics, especially in summer, it is often very hot and dusty, which also wears down the costumes.
A suitable storage space for your costumes is a selfstorage compartment near you in Mainz.
